BayesEM
FALL 2022, DALI LAB @ DARTMOUTH
BACKGROUND
At the Digital and Applied Learning Lab (DALI Lab) at Dartmouth, teams of students consisting of designers, developers, and a project manager work with outside partners to bring the partner’s app idea to life.
BayesEM was a 2-term project at the DALI Lab. Our partners Dr. Babineau and Dr. Pope wanted to create an app that would help doctors with patients who could not be easily diagnosed.
Using data from medical literature, the app utilizes Bayesian Interference to assign the probabilities of different diagnoses for a given patient based on their symptoms. I joined during the second term of BayesEM’s development as a designer.
OUTCOMES
I interviewed medical residents and created a survey on usertesting.com to gather input about how to improve the app. I received feedback from the interviewees that it was hard to remember to enter what the patient’s final diagnosis was into the app.
Based on this feedback, I created a feature that prompts doctors to enter what their patients were ultimately diagnosed with (if anything). In the future, the app will be able to use this user-collected data to improve its predictions.
I iterated on the color scheme, interactive elements, and layout to improve the aesthetic appeal of the app to its users.
At the end of term, the team handed off the completed app to our partners Dr. Babineau and Dr. Pope.
This is a Figma prototype for the app. Click anywhere on the prototype and the buttons you can click will be highlighted in blue.
IMPACT
We helped our partners make their app more intuitive and aesthetically appealing. We also added a new feature to help them collect voluntarily-entered diagnosis data from their users so they can continue to improve their algorithm.
